Eating guide London – two nights

No Gravatar

As I’m in London right now, I thought I would share my eating experiences. I’m here on business, so the rest is not that interesting. Yesterday I dined at an Indian resaturant “La Porte des Indes” close to the Marble Arch underground station. From the outside, it looks like a tiny restaurant, but it is huge! The food was splendid. It is not cheap, but worth the money.
Tonight I was in fact just looking for something light – and quick to eat. Wandering off from my very nice Best Western hotel near Marble Arch, I bumped into a Thai place. I went down Oxford Street and took a left down a pretty narrow street and eventually ended up in his Thai restaurant: “Eat-thai Chaopraya”. I just discovered that they have a web site. They don’t have half bottles of wine and only serve one single wine by the glass which is a pity, since I was dining alone.
I would recommend both restaurants. The food is excellent! Surprisingly enough, none of them have Gewürztraminer on their wine card…

Boycott Sony

No Gravatar

This is not looking good. I totally agree with Dan Goodin. It is a disgrace.

FromWired News: Boycott Sony:

After weeks of criticism, Sony has finally agreed to temporarily stand down on an abusive and likely illegal copy -restriction practice. Hold the applause.

On Friday, the world’s second-biggest record label pledged to temporarily stop making CDs that leave computers vulnerable to security breaches. This is a step in the right direction, but it does not go nearly far enough toward correcting a serious ethical lapse. In fact, it is proof positive that Sony is unworthy of our trust or our business.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 for Mac in development?

No Gravatar

This really isn’t very promising. Don’t buy Adobe product if you are a Mac user and an ordinary consumer. They prefer to cater to their big markets: professional users and the Windows world. The following is an
excerpt from Macworld about the new release of Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Windows:

Adobe explained that with their professional products, a simultaneous release is important to its customers and they adjust their product teams efforts and resources according. By doing this Photoshop or Creative Suite users are able to count on being able to work collaboratively with their counterparts.

“For our professional applications like Photoshop and the entire Creative Suite, simultaneous, cross-platform releases continue to be critical,” an Adobe representative told MacCentral. “Graphics professionals often share working files across heterogeneous networks, and cross-platform releases allow them to make a smooth transition to the new version.”

Unlike professionals, consumers who typically purchase products like Photoshop Elements don’t work collaboratively, so simultaneous releases are not as important.

“This reality gives Adobe the opportunity to balance our resources differently for our consumer products, while still delivering the right products at the right time,” said Adobe’s spokesperson.

While Adobe said that its Windows version of Elements did have more sales than the Mac version, the company said they are still committed to the Macintosh community.

“We’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response to Photoshop Elements 3.0 for the Mac and have also seen an increase in sales within this community. Our Mac customers are still very important to us,” said the Adobe spokesperson.

Adobe would not say when the Mac version would ship or what new features the product will have.
(italicised by me)

One should probably start to look for a replacement for Elements… It was the same story with the version 2.0. Compared to Adobe’s Windows updates to non professional graphics applications, Mac updates are happening light years later!

Printing on Flickr

No Gravatar

I just noticed that Flickr has launched their printing service. You (or whoever you authorise) may now order print of your photos on Flickr. That is, if you (or those you authorise) are located in the U.S. sad
One would think that Flickr would be more international than many other Internet content providers. I don’t know if their customer base in mainly U.s based, but I know that once again the extra services they now provide is U.S. only.
From their blog:

For now it is U.S. only (we know! we’re working hard on rolling it out everywhere!).

I seriously doubt that they will roll out anything here in Luxembourg as it is the case as well with the iPhoto photo printing service sad
As you may notice I am not as ecstatic as many of the others on Flickr (the U.S. inhabitants) – and I suppose they are Windows or Linux users, because the iPhoto service is largely sufficient for your printing needs.
The QOOP service looks interesting though. They ship worldwide, but will the shipping to Luxembourg not be e x o r b i t a n t?

Dead Powermate

No Gravatar

My dear Powermate is now completely dead. Plugging out and in doesn’t help sad It is strange that Griffin Technology hasn’t be able to fix the problem. They are aware of it, but no solution has been found as of yet. Obviously, there is no mention of the fact on their web site that it doesn’t work properly in 10.4. Maybe 10.4.3. will revive my Powermate.
